Starts mid-scene, supplies context later**: "It is two in the morning in a car park in Cardiff, and the groom is explaining to a police officer that the traffic cone is his." - **Maid of honor. Undercuts herself before anyone can judge**: "I have written and deleted this speech four times, which Sarah will tell you is the most organised I have ever been about anything." - **Father of the bride. One image standing in for twenty years**: "There is a photograph on our kitchen wall of a four year old in wellington boots and a tiara, refusing to come inside. That is who I am looking at right now, in a much better dress." ## The story A story in a wedding speech is not a report of events. It needs one detail specific enough that it could not have happened to anybody else, and it needs something to change between the beginning and the end. ### Excerpts that carry a story - **Specific detail doing the work of ten adjectives**: "For two years we shared a flat with one working radiator. She gave me the room with the radiator and never once mentioned it again. I only found out last year that she had told the landlord not to fix the other one, because then we would have had to split the rent evenly." - **A change the speaker noticed and the subject did not**: "He used to text me from outside parties asking if I was nearly there. He stopped doing that about four months after he met her, and I have never once mentioned it until now." - **The laugh built from a real scene, not a joke**: "At four she had a rule that she would only answer to her full name, including the middle one, and she enforced it with a seriousness I have honestly never seen from her since." ## The turn The turn is the moment the performing stops. Every role needs one, and it is the paragraph people quote back to you at the bar afterwards. The mechanism is always the same: signal it plainly, then say something true without decorating it. ### Turns, by role - **Best man. Signals the shift out loud, then states a fact**: "But here is what I actually came up here to say. In fifteen years I have never once seen him fail to show up for someone. Not just when it was convenient. Every time." - **Maid of honor. Resists the sugary register**: "I have watched her choose him on ordinary days, which is the only day that actually counts. Not at the proposal. On a Tuesday, in the rain, when nobody was looking." - **Groom. Small and concrete rather than sweeping**: "People keep asking what changed when I met her. Nothing dramatic. I just stopped rehearsing conversations before I had them." - **Mother of the bride. Says the unsaid thing**: "I have spent a lot of this year being asked whether I am ready. I am not sure that was ever the question. She was ready. I was just standing nearby, trying to look calm about it." ## The toast One sentence. Sincere, not clever. The room is holding glasses in the air and physically cannot wait through a second thought. ### Closing lines - **Names the couple, asks for the glass, stops**: "Please raise your glasses to Tom and Priya, who worked this out a long time before the rest of us did." - **Short, warm, no punchline after it**: "To Sarah and James. To the ordinary Tuesdays." - **Handles a long thank you list by not adding to it**: "I have thanked everybody I am going to thank. There is one thing left.
