Short Best Man Speech: Two Minutes, Done Properly

A short speech is not a failed long one. It is a deliberate choice, and it is almost always the better one.

Nobody in the history of weddings has complained that the best man speech was too short. The same cannot be said in the other direction, and if you are looking for a short speech you have already understood something that most speakers work out only afterwards.

Two minutes is about 250 to 280 words. That is one story, one turn, one toast, and nothing else. The discipline is in what you leave out.

When short is the right call

There are four or more speakers. There is an open bar and it has been open a while. You are nervous and want to be certain of landing it. The couple has asked for brevity. Any one of those and two minutes beats five.

The two minute structure

  1. 1. Cold open (10 seconds)

Straight into the scene, or one joke at your own expense. No greeting, no name, no housekeeping. You do not have the seconds.

  2. 2. Who you are (one clause)

Not a sentence. A clause, inside a sentence that is doing something else.

  3. 3. One story (45 seconds)

Single scene, funniest fact held to the last word. No second story. This is the entire cut.

  4. 4. The turn (30 seconds)

Announce it plainly, then two sentences of the true thing. Short speeches make the turn hit harder, because it arrives before the room has settled into being entertained.

  5. 5. The couple and the toast (20 seconds)

One line about the two of them, then raise the glass in a single sentence.

A complete speech, start to finish

"It is two in the morning in a car park in Cardiff, and Tom is explaining to a police officer that the traffic cone is his. We have shared four flats and one regrettable business idea, so I have seen a lot of Tom's explanations, and I want to say that this was his best work. The officer let him keep it. It is in their hallway now, and Priya has given up asking. But here is what I actually came up here to say. In fifteen years I have never once seen him fail to show up for someone. Not just when it was convenient. Every time. Most of us have to work at that our whole lives. Priya, you have married the most reliable man I know, and he has married somebody who finally got him to buy a proper coat. Please raise your glasses to Tom and Priya."
About 150 words, which runs 75 to 90 seconds once you allow for two laughs and the pause before the turn. That is deliberately under the 250 word ceiling: write to the lower end, because everybody speaks faster than they rehearse.

Questions people actually ask

How short can a best man speech be?
Two minutes, about 250 to 280 words, is comfortably short without reading as reluctant. Below about 90 seconds it can feel like you did not want to do it.
How many words is a two minute speech?
Roughly 250 to 280 at a natural speaking pace, allowing for pauses and laughter. People speak faster when nervous, so write to the lower end.
Is a short best man speech acceptable?
More than acceptable. With four or more speakers and an open bar, it is usually the better speech, and nobody has ever complained that a best man finished early.
What do I cut to shorten a best man speech?
The second story first, then thank yous, then any setup your story needs. Never cut the sincere turn: it is the shortest part and the part people remember.
