A toast is a different job from a speech
A wedding toast is 60 to 120 seconds. Four minutes is a speech, and if you were asked to 'just say a few words' you were not asked for a speech. The wizard on this page starts at two minutes because going longer is how a toast becomes a second best man slot nobody scheduled.
The formula is small on purpose: one quality, one example that proves it, one line to the couple, the glass. If you cannot fit it, you are still writing a speech. Cut until you can.
Pick your role so the toast does not steal the best man's story or the father's welcome. Short still has etiquette.
How it works
1. Pick the role, even for a short toast
A parent's toast and a friend's toast thank different people. The questions follow that.
2. Answer with one scene, not five
If you list, the draft will list, and a list is already too long for a toast.
3. Leave the length at two minutes
You can raise it. You almost certainly should not.
4. Read it once, standing
If it overruns two minutes in the kitchen, it will overrun three in the room.
What the output sounds like
"One quality. He makes a room easier to be in. I noticed it in a doorway in 2018, and I have been noticing it since. To Alex and Sam."
"That is all. Please raise your glasses."
Questions people actually ask
- How long should a wedding toast be?
- Sixty to 120 seconds for a toast. Two to three minutes at the outside. Past that you are giving a speech, and you should use the wedding speech generator instead.
- Who gives a toast rather than a speech?
- Anyone asked at the table, most groomsmen, rehearsal dinner guests, and anyone told to keep it brief. The named reception slots (best man, maid of honor, parents, couple) are usually speeches.
- Is it free?
- Outline and opening free, no card. Full draft $29 once.
- Can I use this for a rehearsal dinner?
- Yes. Two minutes is the right default there, because more people speak.
