Vow Renewal Vows: Examples and a Full Ceremony Script

You already kept the first set. That changes what the second set should say.

Renewal vows have an advantage original vows do not: evidence. The first time, you promised things you hoped were true about yourself. This time you can point at the years and say what actually happened.

That is the whole difference, and most renewal vows miss it by simply saying the original vows again. Say what you learned instead.

The structure that fits a renewal

  1. 1. Look back honestly

Name what these years actually contained, including the hard part. A renewal that pretends it was all easy is a photo, not a vow.

  2. 2. Say what you learned

The thing you did not know at the first wedding and know now. This is the heart of a renewal and the part original vows cannot contain.

  3. 3. Renew the original promise

Repeat one line from your first vows if you remember it, or the traditional form. The echo is what makes it a renewal.

  4. 4. Add the new promise

One promise specific to the next stage of life: retirement, grandchildren, health, whatever is actually ahead.

After 10 years

Looking back

"Ten years ago I promised to love you. I had no idea what I was promising, and I would like to promise it again now that I do."

What you learned

"I thought marriage was going to be the two of us against the world. It turned out to be the two of us against the dishwasher, the mortgage, and a toddler who does not sleep. I would not trade a day of it."

The new promise

"For the next ten, I promise to keep noticing you. It is the easiest thing to stop doing and the only thing that matters."

After 25 years

Looking back

"Twenty-five years ago you married somebody who thought he knew what he was doing. Thank you for your patience with him."

What you learned

"I have learned that love is mostly attention. Not grand gestures. Attention, repeated daily, for decades."

The new promise

"The children are gone and the house is quiet and I find I still want to tell you things first. I promise to keep doing that for the rest of it."

After 50 years

Looking back

"Fifty years. Most of what I know about being a decent person, I learned from watching you."

What you learned

"We promised for better or worse without knowing what the worse would be. Now we know, and I am still here, and so are you, and that is the only vow that ever really mattered."

The new promise

"However long is left, I want to spend it exactly like this. Nothing fancy. Just you, in the next room, where I can hear you."

Renewing after a hard chapter

Honest

"We nearly did not make it here. I am not going to pretend otherwise in front of the people who watched us go through it. I am here because we chose to stay, and choosing is worth more than never having been tested."

Honest

"The version of this promise I made at twenty-six was easy to make. This one is not, and that is why it means more."

Forward

"I am not promising you it will never be hard again. I am promising that when it is, I will do what we did last time. I will stay and work."

A full renewal ceremony script

  1. Welcome

"We are here because [names] made a promise [number] years ago, and they have decided to make it again, in front of the people who have watched them keep it."

  2. The look back

Officiant briefly names what these years contained: the moves, the children, the losses. Two or three sentences, specific to this couple.

  3. The renewal vows

Each partner reads. This is where the examples above go. Around 60 to 90 seconds each.

  4. Ring blessing or re-ringing

"These rings have been worn for [number] years. They are no longer symbols of a promise. They are a record of one."

  5. Family participation

Optional and often the best part of a renewal: children or grandchildren say a line, or a blessing is read by somebody the couple raised.

  6. The close

"By the promise you have made again today, in front of all of us, I am delighted to present you, still, as [names]."

What a renewal is not

A vow renewal has no legal effect; you are already married. That frees you from prescribed wording entirely. Nothing has to be said a particular way, so say the true thing.

Questions people actually ask

What do you say at a vow renewal?
Look back honestly at the years, say what you learned that you did not know at the wedding, echo one line from your original vows, and add one promise specific to the stage of life ahead.
Is a vow renewal legally binding?
No. You are already married, so a renewal has no legal effect and no prescribed wording. That means you can structure the ceremony however you like.
Do you need an officiant for a vow renewal?
Not legally, but somebody should lead it. Many couples ask a friend, an adult child, or the person who married them originally, which tends to make the ceremony warmer than hiring a stranger.
How long should renewal vows be?
60 to 90 seconds each. A renewal audience is usually small and already emotional, so the material lands faster than it does at a wedding.
