Wedding Vows for Him: 18 Examples and How to Write Your Own

Most vows written for a groom fail the same way. They describe a feeling ("you make me so happy") instead of proving it, and a feeling without evidence sounds like everybody else's vows.

The four-part structure

1. 1. The moment you knew

   One scene, not a summary. Where you were, what he was doing, what you thought. This is the only part of the vows that is a story, so give it real detail and then stop.

2. 2. Who he is to you now

   Not who you hope he becomes. Who he actually is on a Tuesday. This is where the small unglamorous detail goes, and it is the line guests tend to repeat back to you later.

3. 3. The promises

   Three or four, specific enough to be breakable. "I promise to always support you" cannot be tested. "I promise to keep asking how your day was until you tell me the real answer" can.

4. 4. The close

   One sentence that lands the whole thing. Short. Said slower than the rest. Do not add a joke after it.

How to make a borrowed line your own

Take any example above and swap the specific noun for yours. "Arguing with a jar of pasta sauce" becomes whatever he was actually doing. The rhythm of the sentence does the work; the detail makes it his.

• Write the detail first, then build the sentence around it. Not the other way around.
• Use his actual words. If he says "it is fine" when it is clearly not fine, that belongs in the vows.
• Say it out loud once. Anything you stumble over is written, not spoken, and needs shortening.
• Keep one line back. The best vows have a single sentence nobody has heard you say before, including him.

The mistakes that sink it

• ✕Listing adjectives. "Kind, funny, generous, patient" tells the room nothing. One example of him being kind beats four words for it.
