Why a template still fails if you leave the blanks generic

A best man speech template is useful for one reason: it stops you opening with a dictionary definition of friendship. It is useless for every other reason if you fill the blanks with adjectives. Kind. Loyal. My best mate. The room already knows that. The blank is there for a scene.

Use the classic outline if you have one story that can carry three minutes. Use the short outline if you are nervous, late, or speaking after two other people. Do not combine them. That is how you get to seven minutes.

If filling blanks still feels like writing, that is the generator's job. You still have to bring the story. The tool only orders it, cuts the lines that do not earn their place, and marks the pauses.

A template you can actually say

Classic, about three minutes

  1. Open mid-scene: '[specific image from a story you are about to tell].'
  2. One line on who you are to him: brother, school friend, the colleague who would not leave.
  3. The origin in two sentences: where you met, what you were both like then.
  4. One chaotic memory, told as a scene, not a list of adjectives. End on the detail the room can see.
  5. Put the jokes down. 'Here is what I actually came up here to say.' One true quality, proved by that story.
  6. One sentence to the person he is marrying, by name, about something you have actually seen.
  7. Toast in one sentence. Sit down.

Short, about two minutes

  1. Name, relationship, years. No throat clearing.
  2. One story, five sentences, beginning middle end.
  3. One line about what changed when he met [partner].
  4. Raise the glass. To [names].

How it works

  1. 1. Pick the outline that matches the slot

    Classic for a proper toast. Short if the couple asked everyone to keep it brief, or if you are not the only groomsman speaking.

  2. 2. Fill only the blanks you can see

    A photograph, a trip, a sentence he said. If you cannot picture it, delete that line rather than inventing a joke.

  3. 3. Read it out loud once

    The first stumble is the edit. Cut that clause. Then you are done, or you paste the same material into the questions above.

  4. 4. Prefer the generator if the voice is still wrong

    Templates flatten everyone into the same cadence. The wizard writes from your phrasing instead.

Questions people actually ask

Is a template enough?
It is enough if you fill the blanks with things only you know. It is not enough if you leave 'loyal' and 'hilarious' in them. If the handwriting is the hard part, use the generator on this page.
How long should I make it?
Three to five minutes for the classic outline, two minutes for the short one. The short one is not a cop out. It is often the better speech.
Can I mix both outlines?
No. You will double the thank yous and tell the story twice. Pick one.
