Mother of the Bride Speech: Structure, Examples, and What to Leave Out

The speech that was not traditional until recently, which means nobody can tell you how to do it wrong.

For most of the history of wedding speeches, the mother of the bride did not give one. That is changing fast, and it leaves a useful gap: there is no fixed template you are being measured against.

What there is instead is a specific advantage. You have known her longest. No other speaker in the room can say anything about who she was at four years old, and that is material nobody else has.

How long

Three to five minutes, roughly 400 to 650 words. If you are speaking alongside the father of the bride, agree a split in advance so the two of you do not run nine minutes between you.

The structure

  1. 1. Open with her, not with logistics

Skip the thank-yous to the venue and the roll call of travelling relatives. Start with a two-sentence image of your daughter at an age nobody in that room knew her.

  2. 2. Who she was

One specific childhood story. Not a list of qualities. One scene that reveals the thing she still is. Stubborn at six, stubborn at thirty, and it turned out to be the best thing about her.

  3. 3. The line to who she is now

Connect that child to the adult standing in front of you. This is the pivot the whole speech rests on, and it is usually one sentence.

  4. 4. Welcome her partner properly

Specifically. Not "we are so happy to welcome you to the family", which every parent says. Name the moment you knew they were right for her.

  5. 5. The advice and the toast

One piece of advice, from your own marriage or your own life, offered lightly rather than delivered. Then the glass.

How the opening sounds

Opening

"When Ellie was five, she informed me that she was going to marry a man with a dog, and that the dog was the important part. Twenty-six years later, I would like everybody to note that she has married a man with a dog."

Opening

"I have been to a lot of weddings where the mother says she cannot believe this day has come. I can believe it. I have been able to believe it since about the third time she mentioned his name in a single phone call."

The pivot from child to adult

The turn

"She was a child who could not be talked out of anything. It was exhausting. It is now the thing I admire most about her, and I suspect it is the thing you love most about her too."

The turn

"I spent eighteen years teaching her to be kind and she spent the last ten teaching me what it actually looks like."

Welcoming their partner

Specific

"I knew about you the night her car broke down outside Leeds and she rang you instead of me. I was not offended. I was relieved."

Specific

"You have never once tried to impress me, which is exactly how you impressed me."

Specific

"I watched you listen to her, properly, the whole way through a story I had already heard four times. That is when I stopped worrying."

Closing on the toast

Close

"The only advice I have is the only advice that ever worked for us: be on the same side. Not agreeing, on the same side. There is a difference and you will need it. Please raise your glasses to Ellie and Tom."

Close

"I have loved her every day of her life and I have never been prouder of her than I am right now, in that dress, next to you. To the both of you."

Questions people actually ask

How long should a mother of the bride speech be?
Three to five minutes. If both parents are speaking, split the time rather than each taking five, and agree who is telling which story.
Should the mother of the bride speech be funny?
Warm first, funny second. One or two light lines about her childhood work well. This is not the roast slot, and the room does not expect it to be.
When does the mother of the bride speak?
There is no fixed convention because the speech is relatively new. Most commonly she speaks either alongside or just after the father of the bride, at the start of the speeches. Agree the order with your toastmaster or venue in advance.
What if I am too emotional to get through it?
Print it large, one paragraph per card, and put your most emotional sentence in the middle rather than at the end so you are not fighting tears at the toast. Pausing is fine and nobody minds.
