Wedding Speech Order: Who Speaks When, and How to Change It

The traditional running order, the modern one, and the timing decisions that actually affect the room.

The traditional wedding speech order exists for a structural reason rather than a ceremonial one: it moves from the most formal speaker to the least, and it ends on the biggest laugh. Whatever order you choose, keeping that shape is what makes a set of speeches feel designed rather than assembled.

Here is the traditional order, the common modern variants, and the timing decisions that matter more than the order itself.

The traditional order

1. 1. Father of the bride

   Welcomes the guests, speaks about his daughter, welcomes the groom into the family, and toasts the couple. Sets the emotional register for everything that follows.

2. 2. The groom

   Responds on behalf of the couple, thanks the hosts and both families, and toasts the bridesmaids. This is the speech with obligations attached.

3. 3. The best man

   Responds on behalf of the bridesmaids, roasts the groom, and toasts the couple. Goes last because it is the funniest, and you want the room at its loosest for it.

Note what the traditional order leaves out: the bride, both mothers, the maid of honor, and the father of the groom. That is why almost nobody uses it unmodified any more.

The modern order

1. 1. Father of the bride, or both of the bride's parents

   Still the natural opener. If both parents speak, they split one slot rather than taking two.

2. 2. Father or mother of the groom

   Optional and increasingly common. Keep it shorter than the first parental speech, since the room has already had one.

3. 3. The couple, together or separately

   Either the groom alone in the traditional style, or both partners, or a joint speech. A joint speech is often the most efficient use of the slot.

4. 4. Maid of honor

   Placed before the best man so the two comedic speeches are not back to back, and so the set builds rather than plateaus.

5. 5. Best man

   Last, for the same reason as always. The biggest laugh should be the last thing before the room gets up.

When speeches should happen

• Before the meal: the speakers get it over with and can enjoy dinner, but guests are hungry and the room is restless. Works best when there are only two speakers.
• Between courses: the most common compromise, and the one most venues will recommend. One speech between each course keeps the room fresh but stretches the meal considerably.
• After the main, before dessert: the sweet spot at most weddings. The room is fed, the bar has been open long enough for warmth but not long enough for chaos, and nobody is waiting on food.
• After the meal entirely: cleanest for the kitchen and the venue, but by then some guests have drifted to the bar or outside, and you lose part of the room.
• Two to three hours into the reception is roughly the outer limit. Past that, attention does not come back.

Changing the order without confusing anyone

• Tell every speaker the full running order, not just their own position. People write differently when they know they are following the funny one.
• Tell them who is introducing them and how. A speaker who does not know whether to introduce themselves will waste their opening on it.
• Put the order in writing to the venue, the toastmaster or MC, and the band or DJ. This is where most running orders actually break down.
• Never end on a parent. Whatever you change, the last speech should be the one with the most energy, or the room deflates before the dancing.
• If somebody is nervous, put them first. Waiting through three speeches makes it worse, and the first slot has the freshest audience.

Who introduces the speakers

At a formal wedding, a toastmaster or MC introduces each speaker. Without one, the usual solution is for each speaker to hand over to the next at the end of their own speech, which requires them to know the order. The weakest option is leaving it unassigned, which produces the silence everybody has sat through where two people half stand up at once.

Usually, yes. It is typically the funniest speech and the set should end on its highest point. The main exception is when the couple want to close the speeches themselves.
