Rehearsal Dinner Speech: Who Speaks, What to Say, and How It Differs

Smaller room, more speakers, and material that would not survive the wedding itself.

The rehearsal dinner is where the speeches are actually better, and almost nobody prepares for them. The room is a third of the size, everybody in it knows the couple personally, and there is no wedding running order compressing everything into four slots.

That changes what works. Material that needs shared context, which you would have to cut from a wedding speech, lands perfectly here because everybody has the context.

Who speaks

How long

Two to three minutes each, and expect more speakers than were scheduled. If eight people speak for three minutes, that is a solid half hour, which is at the edge of what a dinner can absorb.

How the material differs from a wedding speech

The structure that fits

  1. 1. Name your connection fast

"I have known Katie since we were eleven." One line, because in this room most people already half know who you are.

  2. 2. One specific memory

Rehearsal dinner speeches are single-story speeches. One memory, told properly, is the whole thing.

  3. 3. Why tonight rather than tomorrow

Acknowledge the room: the people who travelled, the fact that tomorrow gets loud and busy and this is the quiet part. It is the one move available here that a wedding speech cannot make.

  4. 4. A short toast

One sentence. The toasts pile up over an evening with many speakers, so keep yours light and quick.

Host opening the evening

Host

"Some of you have driven four hours, some of you have flown, and one of you came from Auckland, which I think we should all acknowledge. Thank you for being here on the quiet night as well as the loud one."

Host

"Tomorrow there are two hundred people and a schedule. Tonight there are forty of you and no schedule at all, and honestly I think we have got the better end of it."

Parent, less formal than the wedding version

Parent

"I have a proper speech for tomorrow with a beginning and an end. Tonight I just wanted to say, in a room this size, that I have never been more certain about anything than I am about the two of them."

Parent

"I will be crying tomorrow in front of a great many more people, so I am getting some of it out of the way now, with a smaller audience and better wine."

The couple thanking the room

Couple

"We will not get to talk to most of you properly tomorrow. We know that, and we hate it. So tonight, please, come and find us, because this is the only window there is."

Couple

"Everybody in this room is here because you shaped one of us into somebody the other one wanted to marry. That is a strange thing to be thanked for, but there it is."

Friend or sibling, single story

Friend

"I am not speaking tomorrow, which means everything good I have is going in the next ninety seconds, so I would ask for your full attention and a reasonably low bar."

Sibling

"I have got the big speech tomorrow, so tonight I will just say one thing I am not going to be able to say in front of two hundred people without falling apart."

Questions people actually ask

Who gives speeches at a rehearsal dinner?
Traditionally the host, usually the groom's parents, opens. Then both sets of parents, the couple, siblings, and members of the wedding party not speaking at the reception. It is also where people who wanted a wedding slot and did not get one can speak.
How long should a rehearsal dinner speech be?
Two to three minutes. There are usually more speakers than at the wedding, so the total matters more than any individual speech.
What is the difference between a rehearsal dinner speech and a wedding speech?
The room is smaller and shares context, so you can reference people without introducing them and be warmer and less performed. It is also not the place for the big roast if you are speaking at the wedding too.
Do the bride and groom speak at the rehearsal dinner?
Usually yes, briefly, to thank people for travelling. It is often the only chance they get to address guests in a room small enough to actually see everybody.
